Climb Mount Kilimanjaro – Umbwe Route

A steep, direct and challenging route to the summit - perfect for experienced trekkers seeking a quieter and more demanding ascent.
The Umbwe Route is one of the most direct and challenging ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a steep ascent and a true sense of adventure from the very first day.
Approaching from the southern side of the mountain, this route is known for its dramatic ridgelines, rapid elevation gain, and quieter trails compared to more popular routes. It is best suited to experienced trekkers or those looking for a more intense and physically demanding climb.
While the fast ascent makes acclimatisation more difficult, the reward is an incredibly scenic and immersive journey through Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes - from dense rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and the arctic summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
The Umbwe Route joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp before continuing along the Southern Circuit to the summit, combining a challenging ascent with one of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic summit approaches.
